Leap Year!! - The Solutions
March 3, 2008

365/365.25 = x/360

x = 359.75°, to the nearest hundredth

First we’ll find the circumference of the complete 360 degree orbit.

C = 2πr

(2π)(150,000,000) = 300,000,000π

Now we’ll set up a proportion.

x/300,000,000π = 365/365.25

x = 941,832,705.2 km, to the nearest tenth

As we did in the last question, we’ll set up a proportion.

x/300,000,000π = 366/365.25

x = 944,413,068.8, to the nearest tenth

In one 365-day year there are 8760 hours (356 days × 24 hours per day).

In the second question we determined that the earth travels 941,832,705.2 km

Therefore the speed at which the earth orbits the sun is 941,832,705.2km/8760hr = 1.1 × 10 ^5 km/hr, to the nearest tenth.
