Did you know that after only two weeks of voting for the Reel Math Challenge, over 60 videos were submitted, over 100,000 votes were cast and there were over 50,000 views of those videos? We're excited! Are you? Four team finalists will win all-expenses-paid trips to the 2012 MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida. However, in case you're still on the fence about whether to participate in the inaugural Reel Math Challenge, we are announcing even more prizes! Beginning this Friday, December 9, MATHCOUNTS will conduct a weekly drawing. Each week, one lucky team will win four $25 gift cards to Amazon. Every video submitted will receive one entry into the weekly drawing -- so the more videos you submit, the more chances you have to win! Each video submission must conform to the rules of the Reel Math Challenge as stated in the FAQ section of www.reelmath.org. Please click here for official weekly drawing rules. Don't forget to take advantage of the MATHCOUNTS Club Program incentives and rewards! It's not too late to work toward reaching Silver Level Status in the MATHCOUNTS Club Program. Your school must have at least 12 students* who each participate in at least 5 of the 6 Silver Level Challenges. These Challenges (and their answer keys and solutions) can all be downloaded from the Club Program “MCP Members Only” page of www.mathcounts.org. All six Silver Level Challenges are available online and in the Silver Level Status Packet (which can be found in the Club in a Box Kit you received). Schools attaining Silver Level Status will receive (1) recognition on mathcounts.org, (2) certificates for all students, (3) a Silver Level School plaque and (4) entry into the drawing for $250 gift cards. (The drawing deadline is March 4, 2011, but the other incentives are available to schools that send in their application through the end of March.) Once Silver Level is attained, schools can then work to obtain Gold Level Status and even more rewards, including a drawing for a trip for four students/one coach to watch the 2011 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Washington, D.C. Gates Funded Math Teaching Resource
6/21/2010
Teachers, an organization called Guranteach (www.guaranteach.com) recently reached out to MATHCOUNTS to request volunteers to help conduct research on the most effective ways of teaching mathematics via short-form video distributed on the internet. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funding the research project through a grant. Details and contact information follow below: "The Gates Foundation grant asks for us to produce 1500 new videos between now and the end of August, using the best available teachers and our growing knowledge of how internet-based education is best produced and utilized. These videos will all deal with pre-algebra or beginning-level algebra and can be filmed by teachers at home (using basic webcams or camcorders) or, for those who are local, in our production studio in Baltimore, MD. Once filmed, videos are shown to students by our teacher-researchers and their impacts on learning measured. Teachers use our lesson outlines and should be able to commit to producing 10-20 videos each per week. Teachers can commit to the project for any length of time, ideally for a period allowing them to create 50 or more videos. Once a teacher has developed his or her optimal production strategy, it is reasonable to expect to complete 3-4 videos per hour. The caveat is that the Gates Foundation requires that all teachers in the project be able to point to some objective data which demonstrates that they have had a strong positive impact on students performances and learning. A broad range of data and types of data can be offered to the Foundation to meet this requirement, and I am happy to speak with teachers to help them get a sense of what they may have access to and how it might be gathered or presented. Examples might include (but not be limited to) improvement in standardized test scores (percentiles), improvement in performance at math competitions, etc." To participate, or for additional information, please contact Craig Coletta via email (craig@guaranteach.com) or by phone at 410-202-4621.

K-12 Students: Tell us why Science is Cool! Enter now for the USA Science & Engineering Festival Kavli Science Video Contest! Have your video screened on the National Mall, win prize money and electronics and possibly even a trip to the Expo in Washington D.C.! Do you think Science is cool? Do you want to share your passion for science with others? Here is your chance to inspire thousands of people to be more curious, and to care about science & engineering the way you do: create a short video that explores the question "Why is Science Cool?" Videos might explore a scientific concept, show us the wonders of nature, give us a glimpse into the future, show us what scientific discovery has done for us in the past or will do for us in the future, introduce us to a great scientist or engineer, tell us why you think science is so cool or simply show us why we should care about science and/or engineering. Sponsored by The Kavli Foundation and conducted in partnership with SciVee, the contest closes on July 15, 2010. Prize money goes to the organization the student is representing (be it a school, after-school program, or other outreach program) - students win electronics prizes and either a trip to DC to the Expo or tickets for a VIP event to meet the Mythbusters. NASA has teamed with USA TODAY Education to create the "No Boundaries" project and national student competition. This project is designed to help students explore careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The effort also offers students the opportunity to learn more about NASA. The goal of the project is for students to work in small groups to develop a creative project (website, video, podcast, song, etc.) that markets careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to teens. These student groups will then present their projects to their classmates and a class of younger peers. The No Boundaries Web site includes a Teacher Toolkit and step-by-step instructions for teachers to implement the project in the classroom. Background information and links to websites with career information are also provided. After presenting their projects, groups are encouraged to enter them in the No Boundaries National Competition. All contest entries must be submitted to USA TODAY Education no later than April 15, 2010. To learn more about the project and contest, visit the No Boundaries Web site at http://www.usatoday.com/educate/nasa/index1.html . Please e-mail any questions about the No Boundaries Competition to Maria Dubuc at mdubuc@usatoday.com.
