The Pool – The Problems

July 26, 2010

As we all try to keep cool this summer, here are a few questions related to pools from 2006.

Janelle loves hanging out at her neighborhood pool.  On Friday she arrived at the pool at 10:30 a.m. and left at 4:15 p.m.  During each hour, the pool has a 15-minute adult swim from 45 minutes after the hour to the top of the next hour.  During what percent of Janelle’s time at the pool on Friday was it adult swim time?  Express your answer to the nearest whole number.

There are 80 households that are members of Janelle’s pool.  Sixty percent of the households pay the standard $200 membership feel.  Thirty percent of the households receive a 20% discount on the standard membership fee and the remaining households do not have to pay a membership fee.  What is the average membership fee per household for the 80 households?

Janelle’s pool is rectangular in shape; it is 40 feet wide and 100 feet long.  The first 47 feet of the length is the shallow end (three feet deep) and the last 47 feet of the length is the deep end (eight feet deep).  The middle six feet of the length is where the floor of the pool steadily and gradually drops from three feet to eight feet deep.  How many inches does the depth of the pool change from the 48th to the 49th foot of the pool’s length?

The solutions to this week's problems will be posted on Monday, August 2nd, 2010.
