Lou DiGioia, CAE
As the executive director of MATHCOUNTS, Lou DiGioia leads the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated solely to extracurricular middle school math activities. Founded in 1983, MATHCOUNTS has had over 3 million students from all 50 states participate in its fun and challenging math programs. MATHCOUNTS engages students through three distinct offerings. The Competition Program inspires student excellence through challenging math contests. Teams of students proceed through local and state playoffs for the chance to compete in the Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition. The Club Program builds student confidence and enthusiasm at all levels by providing schools with the free resources and structure to hold afterschool math clubs. The Reel Math Challenge, a new free online competition, encourages student innovation as they create and star in their own math videos.
With over 15 years nonprofit management experience, DiGioia first served as director of operations for MATHCOUNTS before being promoted to executive director in 2007. Prior to working at MATHCOUNTS, he was the Program Director of Presidential Classroom, a nonprofit civic education program for outstanding high school juniors and seniors. DiGioia is a former Mathlete®, making him the first executive director in MATHCOUNTS history to have participated in the program as a student. DiGioia graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in American Government and has also earned an MBA from George Mason University. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, a national scholastic business honor society. He is also an active member of the American Society of Association Executives, serving on their Executive Management Section Council, and has earned the Certified Association Executive credential.
