MATHCOUNTS® Competition Program

What is it?

The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests.  The program exists in all 50 states plus 5 U.S. territories and the Department of Defense and State Department schools and it is supported by the National Society of Professional Engineers at the state and local levels.  Public, private, religious and home schools alike are eligible to participate, as long as registered teams consist of 6th, 7th and/or 8th grade students.

What Resources Do Schools Receive?

Each year, the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook is distributed to 50,000 middle schools nationwide.  The handbook is FREE and is designed to prepare students for the excitement and the challenge of the MATHCOUNTS Competition series!  A wealth of resources are available on our website to participating teachers (referred to as MATHCOUNTS Coaches), including the FREE Competition Sets available for download, as well as Volume I of the MATHCOUNTS School Handbook, available for download in its entirety.

Once a school signs up for the Competition, materials are sent to the registered coach that will help facilitate a MATHCOUNTS School Competition.

More information can be found in the links to the right under Levels of Competition and Competition Components.

The registration deadline for the 2010 Competition Season is December 11, 2009. (Late registrations through January of 2010 MAY be accepted at the discretion of MATHCOUNTS and the local coordinator.)

Local/chapter competitions take place in February, followed by the state competitions in March.  (State and local chapters of the National Society of Professional Engineers provide program leadership at the local and state levels.) The grand finale is the 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in Orlando, Florida!
