National Engineers Week, founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, launches the “One Million Hours Initiative” to quantify its global outreach efforts supporting science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

Every day, engineers around the world volunteer an untold number of hours by giving back and reaching out to future engineers. National Engineers Week organizers want the world to know and see the collective strength of these efforts and are challenging all engineers to not only contribute to outreach activities, but log their volunteer hours on a newly designed Web site. The goal? To reach one million hours of outreach in STEM education.

Let’s show the world the engineering community’s collective strength in protecting the health, safety, and welfare of the public and encourage future generations by showing how exciting, and amazing, engineering can be!

Volunteers can:

  • Visit a classroom
  • Participate in an extracurricular or community activity.
  • Volunteer for the National Engineers Week Future City Competition.
  • Host a Design Squad program.
  • Introduce a “Girl to Engineering.”
  • Help with National Family Day
  • Attend or present at a career fair.
  • Participate in programs like MATHCOUNTS, JETS, robotics competitions, or any other student design or engineering-related competition.

Now through December 31, 2009, be sure to log in and track your hours by clicking here, or for more information visit www.eweek.org.
