One Last Time: The Last Week of the Olympics - The Problems

It's not much. Just a 0 and a 1 following a decimal point. Just one-tenth of one-tenth. We're talking about 1/100 seconds. In terms of time, it's about the smallest amount a human can perceive. But it's enough to separate the gold medalist from the silver medalist at the Olympics. Belarus's Ekaterina Karsten defeated Bulgaria's Rumyana Neykova in the 2000-meter single scull by just 1/100 of a second. Sprinter Ato Boldon says he can feel a hundredth of a second. "I feel it in the rounds," he says. As he crosses the finish line, he'll guess that his time is around 9.85 seconds... and then he'll look at the clock and see that he's right. It's not much, really. Consider a person jogging at the rate of 1 mile in 8 minutes. How many miles will she travel in one hour? Okay, now the tough question... how far will she jog in 1/100 of a second?

 

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet: In 1/100 of a second, a bullet fired from a Colt .45 will travel about 8 feet. What is the speed of the bullet, in miles per hour?
